TIGER JEET SINGH PUBLIC SCHOOL

In March 2010, the Board of Trustees at Halton District School Board (HDSB) unanimously voted in favour of naming it’s new school in Milton, Ontario, Canada as Tiger Jeet Singh Public School (TJS). HDSB has helped build a universally accessible, publicly funded education system for the Government of Ontario that is amongst the best in the world. TJS is the first school in Canada to be named after a person of South Asian descent and the only school in the world to be named after a professional wrestler. The decision in naming the school after Tiger was not based upon his many wrestling accolades, but consideration was given towards his contribution to the community and throughout the world as a humanitarian and his philanthropy through the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation. TJS is home to approximately 1,200 students from JK to grade 8.

In September 2010, with chants from students of “TJS, TJS, TJS”, Tiger Jeet Singh Public School officially celebrated its grand opening. Celebrations began on the school playground with two special events; Roger Hadfield, father of NASA Canadian Astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield, flew his bi-plane over the school, which was followed by a presentation of Bhangra dancing. Students, staff and guests proceeded into the school gymnasium for the formal opening ceremonies. Among the 1,500 plus attendees included members from all three levels of Canadian government, Dignitaries and a large contingent of media made up from major television networks, including as far away as Japan and India.
